Port of Argentia Applauds Government & Husky Funding for Warm Idle at WWRP Site
Port of Argentia applauds the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and Husky and its partners in committing $83 million dollars to maintain the West White Rose Project in warm suspension during 2021. The project, the first to be funded under the Oil and Gas Recovery Assistance Fund, part of the Federal Government’s announced $320 million in support to the industry, will see $41.5 million being injected by government and equally matched by WWRP partners.
Port CEO Scott Penney sates, “This infusion comes at a critical time and we’re pleased that some level of activity will take place at the construction site in Argentia during 2021, putting a number of tradespeople back to work and generating spins off to local businesses in the Placentia area. While this measure is a good step in preserving the option to restart the construction project, we look forward to a future announcement that the project will be fully reactivated.”
Husky and partners are constructing a Concrete Gravity Structure (CGS) in a purpose-built graving dock at Argentia. Construction was suspended in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting plunge in oil prices.
Penney says, “The Husky CGS project is the anchor tenant at the Port and its operation is key to creating job opportunities and vital spin off activities in the region and the whole of the province.”
