Port of Argentia Disappointed in Marine Atlantic’s Decision to Suspend Seasonal Service

In a letter to Marine Atlantic, the Port of Argentia has expressed its disappointment in the crown corporation’s decision to suspend its seasonal service to/from Argentia/North Sydney for the 2020 season.

This vital seasonal link to mainland Canada provides much needed economic spinoffs to our local area and indeed to the region and the entire province. This decision will see the loss of approximately 30 direct local jobs and will result in significant negative impacts to our local economy, specifically in the service and tourism industries.

The Port understands that during these unprecedented times and with travel restrictions in place, that tourist volumes will be significantly reduced this year. However, the Port is asking Marine Atlantic if it has considered other ways to offset tourist traffic, possibly with enhanced commercial vehicle traffic.

The Port of Argentia is requesting a meeting with Marine Atlantic to discuss short term options and engage in dialogue regarding long-term plans for this vital seasonal service to mainland Canada into the future.
