Port of Argentia Secures Contract to Support US Offshore Wind Market

Argentia, NL – September 18, 2024.

Port of Argentia is excited to announce it has secured a significant contract to receive and store offshore wind turbine blades. These blades will be stored at a secure compound at Argentia and eventually transported and installed at Eastern United States offshore wind farms.

“Capitalizing on our place as North America’s first monopile marshalling port, we’re now positioned to further expand our capabilities by securing a contract to store and marshall 220 offshore wind turbine blades. The addition of wind turbine blades demonstrates our unique storage capacity and adds to our portfolio of offshore wind projects. This new contract further cements the Port’s critical role as a US offshore wind marshalling port,” states Port of Argentia CEO Scott Penney.

The announcement was made to an audience of over 240 attendees at the Placentia Chamber of Commerce’s Placentia Bay Industrial Showcase.

“Congratulations to Port of Argentia on this most recent contract in support of the US offshore wind market. Through its business acumen and extraordinary site features, the Port is once again demonstrating its leadership in how Newfoundland and Labrador companies can participate on the world stage in this growing industry,” says Energy NL CEO Charlene Johnson.

“The Port continues to attract significant contracts in the global energy market. This is good news for the Port and our local supply chain, and it helps generate substantial economic spinoffs for our communities and workers,” says Port Chairperson Genny Picco.

This arrangement with Scan Global Logistics, a global transportation and logistics company headquartered in Denmark, will see 220 wind turbine blades arrive via heavy transport vessels at Argentia, beginning this fall and continuing into 2025. Vessels will then collect and deliver the blades for installation at wind farms off the Eastern Seaboard of the US.  The Port has entered into a lease and services agreement for marshalling and security services utilizing a 12-hectare bonded yard at Argentia.
