Port of Argentia Initiatives

Argentia Battery Park

Port of Argentia’s is proud to develop a new commemorative park as a dedicated space to honour the legacy of the United States military and the lasting impact it had on our region.

From the early 1940s through the Cold War era, Argentia served as a major strategic base for the U.S. Navy, playing a vital role in North Atlantic defense. But beyond its military significance, the base helped shape a unique community—one built on shared purpose, enduring friendships, and cross-border cooperation.

The Memorial Park will serve as a place of reflection, remembrance, and celebration—commemorating the lives and contributions of service members and their families, while also recognizing the deep and lasting ties they formed with the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.

It also represents the sacrifice and connection of the original residents of Argentia who relocated to allow the development of the base.

With interpretive displays, historical markers, and green spaces, the park will be a meaningful addition to the Port and the community—a reminder of our rich history and a tribute to the generations who lived, worked, and served in Argentia.

To create a park reflective of our community, we welcome feedback and comments to contribute to its design and direction. The boards below show the concept in development.

Community Youth Network: Mindful Futures

Port of Argentia is proud to support the Mindful Futures – Youth Wellness Program, a collaborative initiative led by Community Youth Network – Placentia, in partnership with Freshwater Community Centre and NL Health Services. This vital program empowers at-risk youth (ages 12-18) by providing essential life skills that promote mental, physical, and social well-being.

Through hands-on activities, mentorship, and access to crucial resources, Mindful Futures helps young people develop resilience, self-sufficiency, and leadership skills. By partnering with organizations dedicated to youth development, mental health, and community support, Port of Argentia is investing in a stronger, healthier future for the region.

Together, we are making a lasting impact—ensuring that the next generation has the tools and opportunities they need to thrive.

Trinity Conception Placentia Healthcare Foundation

Port of Argentia is proud to support the Trinity Conception Placentia Health Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing health care services for the 70,000 residents within the Trinity Conception Placentia region. Since 1989, the Foundation has played a vital role in funding modern patient-care facilities, upgrading essential equipment, and ensuring access to high-quality medical services beyond government funding.

As part of our commitment to community well-being, Port of Argentia has contributed $10,000 to upgrade the Chemotherapy Treatment Room at Placentia Health Centre. This donation has provided specialized equipment, including a chemo treatment chair and a blanket warmer unit, creating a more comfortable and supportive environment for patients undergoing treatment.

In 2025, Port of Argentia donated $10,000 to support door wrapping at the Lions Manner Nursing Home. This initiative provides aesthetic comfort for residents, creates a sense of home and ownership for rooms, and helps support wayfinding for those navigating dementia.

By investing in local health care infrastructure, we are helping ensure that residents receive the best possible medical care close to home. Port of Argentia remains dedicated to working alongside the Foundation and community partners to improve health services for all.

Port of Argentia makes a community contribution to the furnishing of the Placentia region Lions Manner Nursing Home

Placentia Area Theatre d’Heritage: Patron of the Arts

As part of our ongoing commitment to community, the Port of Argentia is proud to support the Placentia Area Theatre d’Heritage (PATH) as a Patron of the Arts through an annual contribution of $5,000.

PATH plays an important role in preserving and promoting the region’s rich cultural heritage through live theatre and storytelling. Their productions celebrate the unique history, traditions, and people of the Placentia area, while engaging audiences of all ages.
